Topic: Final Thoughts--Pics Posted: 20 Feb 2010 at 9:01pm |
3/22/2010
I have had my computer for a few weeks now and I am enjoying it a lot. The computer works flawlessly, it is very powerful, quiet, and it plays games at 70-100+ fps.
I HIGHLY recommend DS to anyone who is in the market for a high quality, high performance PC.
Original post:
I usually do not post in Forums, but this time I will do it to help others who like me:
- Is in the market for a high quality gaming computer
- Wants to do business with the best
- Is looking for a smooth transaction online
- Expects the highest quality of product and customer service
So I will outline my experience from the beginning.
I have been shopping online for months now, preparing for the day I would be ready to place my order. I have looked at all other significant players in the custom PC market arena. I finally boiled it down to two players, DS and "the other company". It boiled down to the following decision:- Go with "the other company" and get a lower price, but risk having issues
- Or go with DS, pay a slight premium and feel 100% sure everything will go great
I was tempted to go with "the other", but I wanted the peace of mind and the high level of craftsmanship that most reviewers here attest to. So I placed my order on Thursday 2/18/2010. For exact build look below.
Within that day and the next day I received 5 e-mails that have provided much needed reassurance that everything is proceeding according to plan. So far so good.
I will continue my post throughout my experience to include pics once I receive the machine.

Well, I did some reading and soul searching over the weekend and I changed my mind on the configuration. I notice that I could have a more powerful computer if I let go of the shiny case and instead go with the X58 platform.
So I called this morning and spoke to Mike who took good care of me. My new configuration is as follows:

Great choice IMO, now the x58 platform is compatible with the 6 core cpus coming out (i7 980x and 970) and you can update to these chips in 2 or 3 years if you want a more powerful cpu and by that time the cost will be very low.
plus you got a better mobo and 2 more GB of ram then before all for $15 difference

Thanks for the feedback DST4ME. I actually enjoyed reading some of your posts and your point is well taken.
I do like the feeling of knowing that I can upgrade to a faster and more powerful chip later on down the road. Plus, the i7 920 should prove to be more powerful than the i5 today.

My pleasure I too see a value in being able to upgrade my cpu down the road to a more powerful one, even if it is from this year, it will still have more cores then what I have now.
I always want to get the most out of my purchase, that includes options down the road.

Great OC by the way.
Did you take a look at the Razer Mamba mouse?

Not in detail. I was looking for a simple mouse. I've never had a programmable mouse before & plus I went over budget as it is. This one was an area where I could save a little money.
All the Razer products I got work flawlessly.
Especially the Mako 2.1 speakers, WOW!
The sound is amazing. I highly recommended them.
I have all my new accessories connected to my old computer and they have given it a new look and feel.
As soon as my new DS shows up (Wednesday 3/10 hopefully) I'll post some pictures and initial thoughts.

Thank you for the recommendation on the speakers. Do you get any feedback through the speakers like when a cell phone rings close by or are they shielded pretty good?

I have not noticed any feedback on the speakers. They are shielded very well.
Here is PC Magazine Review:
BOTTOM LINE
Razer's Mako 2.1 computer speaker system was codesigned with THX, featuring technology that uses desktop surfaces to disperse sound. The result is impressive power and clear, pleasing audio.
PROS
Intriguing design. Very powerful output. Booming low end. Excellent clarity without distortion at high volumes. Multiple inputs—including one on controller.
CONS
Very expensive. Wired controller can be slow and unresponsive. Limited listening "sweet spot."
I do not agree with any of the CONS,
1) I got them for $250 w/ no shipping at Tiger Direct.
Definitely worth $100 more than the Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 and around the same price for Bose Companion II & $100 less than Bose companion 5. The Mako beats them all!
2) You'll see a lot of negative feedback on the wired controller. It works great. Most people that complain about it simply do not read the instructions and are not using it properly.
3) I crank it up on my computer and it fills my entire game room. No sweet spot problems for me.
I originally was leaning towards the Bose Companion II or Klipsch Pro Media 2.1. They both are available to listen to at Best Buy. I took a gamble on the Mako 2.1 and I'm glad to say it payed off. The Razer Mako 2.1 blow them both away. The Klipsch pro Media 2.1 has overbearing bass and not clean enough mids and highs. The Bose on the other hand has great mids and highs but weak bass.
Not since my Iphone have I been as impressed with a product as I'm with these speakers.

Here are the pictures:
Flawless packaging-System arrived in perfect shape.
Protective foam keeps everything inside in place.
Love that V8
Here is the computer being handed down to the kids= AMD 64 chip + 1.5g RAM + HD 3850 AGP= Enough said!
Everything put in place cleanly
It ran from the word GO!
Finally, all set up and ready to go.....
Understated looks, but deceptively powerful

Yeah beautiful PC man! Great set-up all together. I too would put a piece of wood or something under the HAF 922 because their is no filters in that case.
Looks great and have fun!
edit: also, thanks for the pic, it's fun to look at the awesome shiny new pc's.

I just installed 2 new games and played them for a short while.
Mass Effect 2 & Supreme Commander 2.
I ran them both at full resolution 1900 x 1200 and all I can say is WOW. I am seriously impressed. Specially with mass effect. It looked ridiculously good and it flows really smooth. I haven't check the Frames per second but I will next time.
I also ran 3D Mark Vantage and it came out right at 16,000.
Any thoughts about that score?
So far I am extremely pleased with this system.

Sweet! Looks like your set. Your getting me all excited again. My new DS-rig should be here monday. I picked up BioSock 2 and Mass Effect 2 also. They are just staring at me, but I won't run them on anything but the new system. I am going from a Cyberpower AMD athlon 64x2 4200+, w/nvidia 9600gt(after upgrading) to a Digitalstorm Intel I7-920(w/OC) w/dual ati 5870's(w/OC). My wife is gonna need a hand grenade to get me out of my den next week!

You know what they say; At the root of every great problem, there is a
woman... Anywho... Nice rig, thanks for the pics. I am about to buy a system with almost your EXACT specifications
(thinking about going with an SSD as well, everything else is the
same)... Do you own Call Of Duty MW2?MW2 is the primary function of this machine for me, and I was hoping to get your framerates at 1680x1050 or higher?. Thanks!

I think Muz has a good idea about raising the computer off of the carpet. You will get more dust sitting on carpet than you will higher. Every time someone walks by a certain amount of dust will be stirred up. Even when the carpet is vacumed you will get dust moving in the air.

That and depending on how plush and so forth a carpet is it could really reduce air to the power supply all together.
