Nice build, if you can swing a larger SSD I would do that. Also I would upgrade the chasis fans since your only watercooling the CPU

I would agree with the larger SSD if you have the budget for it. Otherwise, looks like a solid build.

Hi DarkSydeElement,
A quick change from the Aventum. You will find that the 128Gb SSD will fill up pretty quick. Some of the new games are pretty big. The Hailstorm is a really nice case for water cooling but I never liked it for air cooling of the GPUs. With that case I would remove some of the drive cages to give a better path from the front fans to the GPUs. Or, put a blow hole in the side window with a fan blowing directly onto the GPUs. There is an option for the blow hole in the configurator. While the blow hole is a great cooling aid some don't like the looks of the fan in the side window. You can see a picture in the configurator for the blow hole. I suggest you discuss the GPU cooling with DS. Frank Edited by FrankW - 24 Nov 2014 at 9:24am |

Hey Frank. I really loved the Aventum but when it comes down to the shipping..I have a hard time dealing with 400$ shipping and taking that money away from my dream machine. Would you be able to go any further into what you are thinking...so adding that bigger fans won't do anything to help it out? I have no issues with fans on the side

And also, with the SSD. I was thinking just for the OS and some other programs..from what I've read it does not seem to make a big difference when it comes to gaming besides load time.. I may be wrong so please let me know. Rather get it all right before I click buy

One thing to note on shipping. The current promotion being run is free regular shipping. I figured I'd just mention it.

Correct, as the games level will be loaded into memory, after the load occurs, it will be only making calls to memory (unless it is larger than the memory, you have 16GB spec'd so you should be fine). If you look at the specs for the Samsung 850 Pro you'll see that you get a little bit better sequential write performance (although that isn't that big a deal) and a larger DRAM buffer (a bigger deal as you will have a consistently higher performing SSD). With other SSD's a larger capacity usually means a long lifespan as writes and re-writes can be spread out over a larger capacity, but the high lifespan of the 850 Pro 3D V-NAND makes it one of the first to where this is not really a worry for the consumer. |

Hi DarkSydeElement,
I am at somewhat of a disadvantage as I have not seen a Hailstorm II case in person. The old Hailstorm case needed the blow hole for air cooled GPUs. The Hailstorm II has three 120mm fans at the front that may provide enough air to the GPUs. With your system you might consider putting your RAD at the bottom of the case. This would give you the option of two fans at the top. I would have the front top fan blowing in and the back top fan blowing out. I don't know if you still need the bore hole fan blowing in on the GPUs. It probably won't hurt and DS still has it as an option for that case. That makes me think it is not a bad idea. You can see the case layout in the following picture. You can see a lot of obstructions between the front fans and the GPUs. I tend to go overboard with air cooling and your best source of information is DS. Ask DS if the blow hole fan is needed for air cooling the GPUs in your configuration. I know you are close to ordering your system but you just switched to the Hailstorm II case so maybe you would considered a Velox system. For $4849 you can get a Velox system close to your configuration but with liquid cooling on the GPU, CPU and chipset. Just something to think about. I hope I am not messing you up and I suggest you take a quick look and if you don't like it, get your Hailstorm II system like you have it laid out.

Just a quick point of note:
I received my Hailstorm II earlier this month. Absolutely love it (review to come soon, I promise!! Took pictures yesterday)! It is massive. This might not be a problem if you were considering an Aventum II. However, I believe you will still be stuck with the $400+ freight shipping. If this holiday promo includes that, I'd call yourself lucky and go for it. But if freight shipping was what was steering you away from the Aventum, keep in mind you may be required to get it for the Hailstorm as well. This is what I was told when I purchased mine, as it is a big machine, and it is liquid cooled. I'll admit I had my frustrations over it, but I won't knock it again. As pricey as freight may be, both PC and Display boxes were completely unharmed, not even so much as a ding, and I haven't had a single issue as far as components being jarred loose in shipping. 100% worth it if you're dropping this kind of money on such a piece of art.

Bah you are right on the freight charge..in that case I may just stick with the Aventum. As we get more into the liquid cooling, is there any hassle with it? Refilling etc...also it gets very very cold where I'm at right now. Is there any chance of it freezing and causing issues while being shipped or stored up here?

Do you mean Velox, not Aventum? If you do want to go with an air-cooled GPU setup on the Velox, there are a couple of fans on the side of the case blowing directly over the GPUs.
As for freezing, all I can find on FluidXP's site is "low freezing point" so you'll probably need an answer from the DS guys on what the chances of it actually freezing are. Good call on that. |
