Before I take the leap, any final words of advice as I have seen threads elsewhere on site specifying instructions around voltage, etc. Stayed with 16 Ram because I sometimes multi-task while gaming, and chose P67 extreme over Z68 extreme after reading multiple reviews (only upgrading to extreme to leave room for 2nd GPU and soundcard in the future)

Reagan...That is a great build.. Not much to say.
Ask DS in Special Instructions to keep vcore at 1.4 or less. That is a product of oc'ing and gives ya max performance without sacrificing cpu longevity. Also, not neccessary, but alot ask them to add another fan to the top where there is a place for it. There is one there and this would add a second. It's the Coolermaster MegaFlow 200 Silent non-led fan. I think about $20 and maxes out cooling for that case. Looks great. Go for it. Keep us updated.

Want to try and clarify a couple things for you.
First off, 16GB of RAM will not make any difference over 8GB of RAM in that particular system, regardless of multitasking. If you are doing any sort of multitasking while gaming that will max out 8GB of RAM it will max out your CPU load anyways and still slow you down. With that said if you are going to do anything that maxes out 8GB of RAM you need to look at the x79 platform with either the 3930 or 3960 CPU with their additional cores and large Cache (the 3820 will be just as pointless in this situation as the 2600k). Simply put doing anything that uses more then 8GB of RAM combined with the 2600k is 100% pointless. Second issue, actually scratch the second issue, it looks like DS is no longer offering the V-Pro motherboard. It would have been a better choice price wise and will perform just as well as the Extreme. Like bprat22 said just ask DS to keep the vcore to 1.4v or lower to help ensure a longer CPU life span and splurge the extra couple bucks on the additional top fan. |

So I come home from work excited to get this thing ordered and find that everything on the base model changed! Excited that maybe I would save a few bucks since my system would start from level two rather than three, I rebuild to discover its exactly the same
Forum posters consistently say that 8 Megs ram is more than enough, yet the DS expert advice lists RAM speed and size as the #3 issue in performance, so which is it? $51 for 8 extra meg is far from a deal killer, but it's money toward a new gaming keyboard or monitor upgrade if it's never going to be of use. Final question...since the 680 is now an "upgrade" versus yesterday, what's the deal with the EVGA OC model being offered for a few extra bucks? Worth it or just a heat rocket? Thanks...this really is getting close

Even though the factory oc'd version is safer than a home-brewed oc and because they do it the warranty isn't voided, it's still stress on the board. The ODE4 build looks pretty sweet for the $$$...like the smaller case but cooling might be a concern (?) and would limit abilit to add 2nd card and sound card down the road.
Sorry to be a complete newb about these matters, but you have been very helpful. reading the hardware forum last night I read what I thought was a post explaining that the 6 series cards cannot work to their full potential without ivy bridge tech due to PCI 3.0 issues? Am I completely misunderstanding this, and with many of the mobo's advertising "3.0 ready" I'm even more confused...

The ODE 4 is a great deal and would save you $1000 but, adding another gpu and sound card wouldn't be practical.
As far as PCIe 3.0, there is alot of hype with it. The sli gtx680 for example will do just fine in a x8,x8 pci config. But if you add a third gpu or the sound card on a Z77 mobo then that's when pcie3.0 would come in, it's greater bandwidth helping alot.. If you have the extreme mobo then pcie 3.0, if I understand it right, wouldn't make any difference.

While probably true for gaming I have to disagree with your comment that adding more than 8GB of RAM to an 1155 system is a waste for 'anything'. Most of my heavy use is still-digital imaging/Photoshop. I have a 2600K and started with 8GB, and after a while was running short on memory and using the scratch disk. This caused the machine to slow dramatically. Going to 16 GB of memory made all the difference in the world. You always want to avoid using virtual memory, and that is particularly true in Photoshop. Moreover, except for certain filters, CS5 doesn't use more than 4-cores very efficiently making the extra cost of a 2011 system dependent on particular needs/workflow. Marty |
