Topic: Dragon Age: Origins Posted: 27 Jan 2009 at 2:26pm |
Release Time Frame: Mid March Gone Gold: Not that I have heard. Base Premise: You are a member of a some what secretive society of protectors of the realms, tasked with defending against hordes of demonic minions and the occasional albeit rarely seen actual demons that try to destroy the realms. The game is dark fantasy with some high fantasy elements (powerful magic, elves, dwarves, etc). You can be good or evil (Yay) you can choose to do many different not necessarily nice things and your choices determine the outcome of the story. The moniker Origins in the title refers to your character's origin story which supposedly completely changes the way in game characters treat you and how events around you unfold. The videos on the game home page look really polished and show this off well. I plan to be picking this up release day myself, it looks like an amazing game. dragonage.bioware.comDave

If I read correctly in the article I was reading in PC Gamer. Its not a multiplayer game correct? And by multiplayer I mean its not an online game so I wont have to worry about paying any monthly fees to check out this game.

Single Player RPG, may be vaguely reminiscent of Baldur's Gate in play style based on what I have read and heard Dave

Yeah, I was hearing its like the new Baldur's Gate. So if thats the case, it should be really good. Guess we will find out. Apparently this game is going to be part of a series of games as well. So there will be more to come like it.

That looks like a ton of fun! I just finished watching some videos... and I look forward to playing this game =)! I haven't played Baulder's Gate but I've heard good things about it, so hopefully this will be just as good or better *grins*. Another game to add to my pile!! Thanks ^_~

Bioware is just awesome. I have liked all of their RPGs. I started with the BG series but I was real young and didn't really understand the concept and had a tough time with it. Since then I have played KoTOR and Mass Effect, and I am going back and working on Jade Empire. These guys are the creme of the crop when it comes to RPGs, and Dragon Age is one of my most anticipated games of the year.

I already bought it. But my laptop is only X3100. So waiting for my DS i920 to arrive to play it.

I might get Jade Empire after my PC arrives as well. I am telling there are too many good games out there for me to play and not enough time to play them all.

Just learned the game will be delayed until Q4.
Maybe time for me to finish Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer. It's just that the combat become so confusing and difficult to follow.

Yet another example of EA stupidity, lets delay until Christmas 2009 because we want to show huge sales numbers next Christmas... The game is feature complete and ready to roll, EA just wants bigger holiday sales numbers... Bunch of fascist morons if you ask me. Dave

tbh, I wasn't real enthusiastic about this game, even though I am (or was) a big Bioware fan. The demo I saw had so-so graphics, with characters performing the same combat/spell casting moves over and over . . . . very unimpressed.
That said, yeah, I'll be buying it . There hasn't been a Bioware game I haven't liked yet, and I adored Baldur's Gate and Mass Effect.
This is not MP, SP only. Fine by me.
I think I'm still miffed at Bioware for dropping NWN . . . .

I don't know. Think it looks pretty sweet. Seems a nice jump since Baldur's Gate days... **EDIT** Doh, I meant Neverwinter Nights. Getting my bioware game timeline mixed up. I'm itching to play with the Toolset too. Here's a very new trailer (4 hours old as of 10/21/2009 8:24 EDT). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB1lNlET-4s

This is my GOTY so far... about 3 hours in, just completed the human noble origin story. Graphics are actually pretty damn good @ 1920x1200 8xAA, 16xAF added to the config file. Some fps drops in congested areas but very playable.

The game does seem to be fairly difficult. I'm playing at Normal, and several battles my party's gotten their heads handed to them. I'm finding I've really got to use strategy and character placement.
Anymore I have to use the "H" key to disable independent character movement and orchestrate everything.
The one thing that's really helped so far is selecting Heal as the first new skill for the party mage (Morganne). It has a quick cooldown and cuts down on the healing draughts needed to survive battles.

The graphics on the console versions are spectacularly bad. Alright, a slight exaggeration. Slight. Anyway, how are they on the PC? Can anyone throw up a hi-res screenie or two por favor?

I think they look great, but maybe I am biased as they came from my DSO rig... My monitor is only 1080P (1920x1080) but they are best they can be for that rez
I mean come on, the dwarven king you can see the veins in his arm for crying out loud, and that is game play not cut scene.

do you have AA maxed? your screen shots have lots of jagged edges.
I am disapointed in the magics, no specialization, limited amount of spells, damn consoles.. But so far I am enjoying it.
1920x1200 everything maxed, the FPS seem to vary wildly. some areas I get 200-220 FPS, then others only 60-70FPS.. Game also seems to be pretty well pollished no errors, hangups, after 10 hours of continious play..

I'm finding the difficulty curve to vary a bit too much at Normal. Regular battles are good, and if I'm dumb and don't use tactics I can often lose. That's great, exactly what I'd want to see happen. However, the Boss battles are often way over the top, and I had to reload several times and use "cheese" tactics to win (lure foes one at a time, hit them with missile fire to which the others don't react to, etc). Any more, I just step it down to Easy for the harder Boss battles.
The 1.01a patch supposedly improves your party's bonuses on Normal level. I haven't applied because there's all kinds of posts about how it breaks the game. Some have got it to work by messing around with their MS VC++ libraries and DLL's. I'm just gonna wait until they hopefully "patch the patch".
My first character was a human warrior with the traditional sword & shield, and I didn't like it much. Shield skills just aren't very impressive. Two other warrior skills require you to start out with either Threaten and Taunt, both of which have no beneficial effect and only serve to make you a bigger target! Useful if you want to tank, I guess. My second character - I started over - is a elven Rogue/Duelist specialized in dual wielding, and a heck of a lot more fun.
Current party is Sten (Tank), Morganne (Force multiplier and Healer), and Cody (Mabari War-Dog).

I went with a human noble 2handed warrior. I actually started the game with the same guy and went sword and board so I could use him as my main tank, only to pick up Alistair and see that he was pre-specced basically the same way. Alistair is now my main tank since I didn't want to waste the points he already had in skills. I re-rolled and went 2h so I can use my main as an offtank.

I have it maxxed at 8x, the highest the settings console allows.
It could be an artifact of the screen capture and upload perhaps. I do not know, all I know is it looks nice.

The pictures are fine all I mean is that no picture can do the game justice. You have to play it to see the true graphic quality of the game its self.
