My new rig is running a GTX 690 (I know... yay for me....overkill).
Would it be advisable to to dedicate one GPU to PhysX? What would the pros and cons of doing so be if this were a purely gaming rig? I appreciate the input! Thanks! |

The dedicated physx card was mostly needed with way older generations these new cards will do fine managing the physx together

I just noticed that in all the benchmark testing, reviewers always turn PhysX off. But in your opinion, the GTX 690 will be able to handle the graphics AND physX with little problem? Thanks for the input. |

yes i highly doubt you will have any problems with physx turned on. The most likely reason benchmarks do that is just to get every drip of fps out the card

sweet! i sort of figured that if someone was going to drop tip-top dollar on a 690 that card alone should do everything one needs (at least for the next 4 months or so). |

PhysX is mostly a support module rather than being a feature as marketed by nvidia and Ageia before them. Contrary to popular belief, a multicore CPU is very much capable of handling the type of calculations required to produce accurate and detailed physics (Single-precision FLOPS) The reason PhysX has declined in popularity is that people simply arent buying the PR anymore and devs couldnt care less. To answer your question though, I'm going to second tju76's argument: The Gtx 690 has more than enough FLOPS headroom to tackle PhysX calculations and then some.

Having 2 690s, they auto decide the physics processor and it is rarely used - the GPU (I say singular because Ive rarely tapped both cards yet) has been handling everything.

I appreciate the feedback, guys! after several weeks of gameplay, this system that DS put together is tearing sh*t up. I could not be more impressed with the team.
The 690 is handling everything thrown at it and shows no signs of strain what-so-ever. i love it. |

Yea. Little disappointed. Hopefully a phone call will take care of it.

3 Way SLI might have issues with certain games, NVIDIA does have suggestions usually for 3 Way SLI on what settings to use.

yeah, NVIDIA does not seem to do a great job of offering up optimal settings for their newer cards. The last one they have listed is a 590.
As far as the 690 goes, I am running Sleeping Dogs with all settings set to extreme. Looks phenomenal (minus character cut-scene models). |

valid question. just one dell 27in ultra sharp. i haven't made the leap to 3 monitors or 3d, but i'm sure i would have to scale the settings back to accommodate more monitors.

On a side note, three or four-card SLI setups --or dual 690's-- provide a smoother experience than 2-way SLI due to reduced frame lag aka microstutter. The downsize is the generated heat (unless you're wc'ing them) and higher power requirements, along with taking up additional PCI-e slots. Also, don't listen to people badmouthing high end hardware as "overkill"; there is always the option of having better resolution/AA.
