Topic: Bolt II, upgrading action and psu question Posted: 18 Apr 2014 at 10:25pm |
Hi Guys,
I order bolt 2 and just waiting to be shipped, with config : Processor: Intel Core i5 4570 3.20 GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS MAXIMUS VI IMPACT (Intel Z87 Chipset) (Mini-ITX) (SupremeFX Impact, Sonic Radar) System Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Power Supply: 500W Digital Storm Bolt II Edition Graphics Card(s): 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 1GB (Includes PhysX) For the next couple of months i will enjoy that system, till I have full budget to buy 780 gtx or Titan. Would like to ask for upgrading the VGA card, as this is prebuild system are there any specific steps or action in removing and install the new card. My thoughts as usual, "uninstall the vga driver, turn off pc, remove then install the new card and install new driver. Since bolt 2 is compact design, any of you guys have try to remove the vga card slot, is it easy or have to do it extra careful. Last thing is since my psu only 500watts, will it be enough to accommodate 780 gtx or even Titan. Appreciate for any reply thanks |

Hi kriscahya.... Your procedure for installing a new card is right on. Technically, being the same driver, you might not have to install new but with new hardware, always a good idea.
500w psu is fine and has been tested by DS and others. The new Bolt2 design makes changing the video card a lot easier over the original version. I don't have any hands on but my understanding is that an easy to remove bracket releases the card and then just unplug the two power plugs and the riser card/ribbon cable that connects it to the mobo. Hope this helps. |

Sweet...awesome info...many thanks, thought it will require 700psu for 780, if it is Titan its ok for 700psu but if can work in 500psu, that would be a lot great

It looks like the graphics card sits in its own cage and is mounted parallel with the motherboard. I think they are using a PCIe extender (these are commonly used in rackmount systems) and mounting it behind the drive cage.
The 550 doesn't need any PCIe power lines, but the 780's need two 8 pin lines. I would ask DS to route those lines for you, to ease installation. |

The 500W will handle a GTX 780 or GTX Titan fine. Just leave a note in the comments saying that you would like us to pre-wire the PCIE power lines to the GPU area so you can upgrade in the future.

Just noticed... unless I'm missing it, but Bolt doesn't have a Build Comments section. Maybe the team can just add it.
If you ordered already then maybe call or email DS to do Nav's suggestion if the build isn't too far along. Edited by bprat22 - 20 Apr 2014 at 12:42pm |

That definitely is odd. I messaged our web development team and they should have it fixed fairly soon. |

Build Comments for Bolt, fixed.
kirscahya... Even if they can't make the change, the cables are all there. They might even be hanging in the video card area, but if not, just ty-wrapped to the psu harness for neatness when not used. |
