Anyone have any suggestions? I have a Seagate NAS, and the Memeo Instant backup that came with it just isn't cutting it.

I only trust cloning for backup now in days.

Any particular reason? Also, any suggestions for software?

you can follow my clone guide here

reseaon being complete back that works on its own, I don't need a software to see/use it.

Also reliability, I can check the clone right away and make sure its done correctly, so there is wondering whether it works or not.

Ok, just went through and read that thread.  Quick question: Ok, I get that the cloned HDD could just be slapped into your computer and work as is, however, I honestly don't want to go from an SSD down to an HDD if that happens.  So if I did boot up off the backup clone, I could then just clone it back to the SSD yes?

Clone can be used to ways:

1. you drop it in and go off of it, then when the ssd gets fixed you clone to the ssd.

2. your ssd is fixed or you have a new one and you use the clone to restore from on the ssd, you never actually boot off the clone in this option.

Gotcha, so if you would just boot off the recovery disc and load the clone off the hdd.

So what do you do for individual file back up? Just mount the clone and pull any individual files off? What about backup of a file drive that has nothing installed on it? Cloning would seem to be a waste.

If I want to keep a copy of individual files/folders, I use an app like vise versa and make a set up like this:

say I want to backup folder "X" on my c drive, I simply make a folder on my D drive called "X" also, I then run vise versa and ask it to compare the two "X" folders and update the one on D drive to match the one on C drive, vise versa compares them, in this case since all I did was create a folder with no files, vise versa will ask me to let it duplicate all the X folder on C drive onto X folder on D drive, I say yes and vise versa duplicate, once it a while I just run vise versa and ask it to compare and then ask it to update (duplicate).

I use this for monthly bills for example, db backups, couple of clicks and they are backed up on a external or internal drive.

I clone my OS drive tho, that you want a full working backup off of.

its got a full 30 day trial, give it try first see how you like it.

You can see its full features here, they have added some new ones that I have not used yet.

Ok, ran into some problems booting using the Acronis boot media, but resolved it by using the WinPE acronis boot media wizard.  Backing up now.

Do you test your clone when you are done DST? or just assume it backed up correctly?

The default boot media created by the software or downloaded from the website would hang when trying to launch it on my desktop.  It worked fine on my laptop however.  Looks like it is just an issue with my hardware and whatever linux flavor they have booting on their default boot medium.

Ok, cool.  I figured that was the case.  I really need to get some sata docks for my drives so I can pop them out easier.  It's a pain having to take off both sides of my case. lol.

hotswap bays take care of that, I alway make my cases have that now, for this reason.

the boot media you make, may hang once or twice but then it will get going, but you are not suppose to boot it from desktop, you are suppose to boot the pc off of that bootable rescue cd.
