Hi, what if I wanted some sort of backup battery for a desktop computer that could run the computer for hours like if the power went out or something?
Are these called marine batteries? I'm looking for something thats kind of the same thing as a laptop battery, except bigger and designed for a desktop.

yes thank you this is exactly the kind of thing i'm looking for.

Does anyone know if: the "lead-acid battery" is dangerous in any way, it sounds weird to me.
It says on the graph under the product listing that a 600W unit would run for about 35min. does anyone know if this is accurate?

The 1500 will last ~8 minutes (according to APC's website) when under a 600W load. Normally the idea of a UPS is to allow you time to properly shut down your machine once the power goes out or to just bypass a quick blip in the power - not to play for hours on end. To do that, you'd have to look at a much larger (and expensive) UPS. You'd have to spend around a $1K to get a UPS to last 30min under a 600W load.

When I lived out in the country, where consistant electrical power was unstable, we paired a generator (Honda) with the UPS.  The UPS kept the computer on until we could get the generator started.

Then all we had to worry about was keeping the genny running. Cool

The "lead-acid battery" used in many UPS systems is similar to the batteries found in automobiles and trucks. While fairly safe from a consumer viewpoint, they will eventually wear out and no longer hold a charge. Depending upon the design of the UPS the dead battery may be replaced or the entire UPS must be replaced as a unit. Many government jurisdictions, such as city, county, state or federal governments will have some laws and regulations about the proper disposal of dead "lead-acid batteries" or equipment containing them.

Another note of caution is that is generally a good idea to limit pets and small childrens access to devices operating with household electrical current or any type of strong acid (or base).

*** Disclaimer *** While I have used various UPS units in my household for a number of years without serious incident, we do keep a close eye on our cat who has an uncanny knack of stepping on the UPS circuit breaker button and shutting down the unit along with the entertainment equipment running off of it.
