There really isn't such a thing as too much RAM. The CAD and video editing will be the biggest users of RAM. So, it really is dependent on what kind of work you are doing with that. The more complex, the more memory needed. Memory speed is less of an issue than the amount, so that is a place you could save a bit. Others can probably give you better advice on this. Letting people know what particular programs you are going to be using, would help them to give you better advice.
I think so, with the fan upgrade. I don't really know that a fan controller is really needed the Rampage has 8 PWM fan headers. Asus has very good fan control software to ramp up the fans as needed to keep the system cool. Though I believe this is limited to the CPU temp. So this is personal call.
Depending on the complexity of the video and CAD work, a larger SSD might be in order. It will speed up the work to keep the current project on the SSD. I would suggest suggest dropping the audio card, the Rampage comes with an isolated audio section and I expect that it offers very similar performance to the Sound Blaster. Let us know what kind of display(s) you plan on using. Particularly, the number and resolution for advice on the graphics card selection. Depending on the complexity of the CAD work a Titan maybe a better choice.
Happy to help. ;-) Edited by danjw1 - 17 Sep 2014 at 7:32am |

Looks like a great build to me.
Just to add to danjw1 advice..... If you're going to stay with a single graphics card then the 5820k cpu might be all you need and save you $243. The biggest difference between the 5820k and 5930k are the number of Pcie lanes. The 5820k has 28 lanes and the 5930k has 40 lanes of traffic. For single card, they both run at the full x16 lanes. For sli, the 5830k runs at x16x8 and the 5930k at x16x16. Even for sli, present cards will see very little difference between x16 and x8, but can't say about the future. There is a small base clock speed difference, but that's irrelevant with overclocking. It's in the budget so 5930k is nice. The other is if you need to shave some $$. Good luck. |

Thank you for the input, I appreciate it !!
Last question (I think), I want UPS. Is the high end UPS that DS sells enough for my system? I would also have a 27" LCD plugged in, nothing else. I took your advices- knocked down the CPU, deleted the audio card and the fan controller. Thanks again for your continued advice forum! |

I don't do UPS, but my guess would be a unit that can easily handle a 1000 watt system for added headroom.
Others might be able to help. |

Dell I believe uses APC units on their website. You can go to APC.com and use their UPS calculator to find what works. It uses the system load, a percentage of headroom you want and the run time to calculate.
Hope this helps. |
