Topic: AMD 45nm Phenoms might come earliar than expected. Posted: 04 Nov 2008 at 11:54am |
AMD is planning to launch two 45nm quad-core desktop CPUs (Deneb) – the Phenom X4 20550 and 20350 for socket AM2+ systems with core frequencies of 3GHz and 2.8GHz, respectively in November this year, according to sources at motherboard makers.
The company will also launch six 45nm triple-core CPUs (Heka and Regor) including 14x00, 12x00 and 1xx00e series. These triple-core CPUs will enter design validation test (DVT) and start shipping in the first quarter next year. |

Wouldn't going from Quad Cores to triple-core's be a step back? Or is there some increased efficiency design?

The Phenom 20550 is what I been hoping to see results on. Early overclocks seem to suggest that with a mobo setup of 790FX chipset and 750sb, it can run pretty fast. Was 3.6GHz with a tec and one mention of a 4.0GHz on liquid cooling. Now to see what real people will be getting...
Patrick, the triple-cores are basically phenom quads where one of the processors doesn't meet spec and is therefore disabled. The three other cores run fine and are sold at a price reduction. In most cases that I've seen reports of multicores, the 3cores perform right in between dual core and quad core as would be expected. I like their concept of a triple core as it reduces waste and makes for less costly quad cores that DO meet spec. Also, wasted silicon is just a shame. After all, the materials used in manufacturing wafers are very pure and quite costly. In the end, any waste is paid for by the consumer. As a poor consumer, in the end I may upgrade from my dual core to a triple core... instead of going on to a quad.
