Hi all, I had my heart set out on buying my first gaming rig from DS but alas it looks like I'd be paying a $1000 premium for my $3000 rig just to cover currency conversion rates between USA and CDN dollar and taxes...
I don't have the time nor patience to look into building my own rig, I was hoping to buy 1 pre-made then learn how to upgrade it as individual parts age. My question for you guys is, what are my options now? In Canada, there really is no reputable company that custom builds gaming PCs with the exception of Alienware from Dell.... |

Do you know of anyone in your area that could build you one? If buying from DS isn't an option due to the 1000 premium thats one other option.

I heard Canada Computers, Tiger Direct heck I'm sure there's plenty of places that will help build it for me. Its more work for me but I guess that's my only option. My DS build order is: 1096563 I imagine I could find better deals/parts from newegg for certain components but all in all I'd like to replicate this as best I can. I'd probably trade the MOBO for an Asus Maximus VII Formula and GPU for a Superclocked EVGA. If anyone has any other recommendations on what I should improve upon from newegg please do let me know. Edit: My only concern with someone else building my machine is quality assurance/testing. That's my main fear, that I'd be spending almost $3000 but have it built by some random for $60. One thing I liked most about DS was knowing I'd get a quality optimally tested build. Edited by Xenris - 17 Nov 2014 at 7:17pm |

Hi Xenris... If your heart is set on a DS rig then I would change the build to more match your needs now. I believe you game only, on a single 1080p monitor. If so, change the cpu to an i5, all gaming needs, a non-sli mobo like the z97-P and a 750watt psu. It doesn't allow sli but the gtx 980 will play great on your monitor. 2 years ago an sli setup was needed for max gaming, but not anymore in most cases. You could also drop the storage to 1 Tb HDD and a 256gig SSD. Adding a drive you can buy locally might help. This might get you to $2500 and drop the shipping/duties cost to maybe $800.
If you really want sli down the road, the Gryphon mobo and a 850watt psu will handle sli 980. Just another option. |

Here's an example of sli ready, with a few changes. I did leave in the Hero mobo but others would work great for less.

Another option would be to buy a Vanquish Level 4. If you do game on a 1080 monitor then the GTX 970 should do very well.
The system is overclocked again I believe plus it has an SSD . This reduces the cost in a huge way which I assume would drop your other fees you pay for buying and shipping it to Canada. Edited by Ariktu - 18 Nov 2014 at 2:30pm |
