Alright guys this is what I almost built.  Prices have recently come down(which they cleverly put as a 250$ instead of 100$ discount upon purchas) and I want to build for under 3000 with a plan to play games at 1920x1200 resolution.
This is what I came up with:

antec 900 case
q9450 cpu with OC
4 gb 1333 corsair ram
790i mobo
dual radeon 9850 sli ( seems to match the 9800gx2 and gtx 280 but cheaper and cooler)
stage 3 cooling
nvidia esa
onboard audio
death adder mouse and wolfking keyboard
64 bit vista
500 gb and 250 gb 7200 rpm drives(250 gb for gaming only)
dvd burner lightscribe
it comes out to about 2950$

In 1-2 years I plan to get a 9870X2 when the prices come down.  I dont want to wait 2 months to get it now and pay an early high price.  Any changes you would make for an avid non-extreme gamer?

First, if you're set on 2 radeon 9850 cards in crossfireX, you will need to change mobo over to the ASUS Rampage formula, because it is crossfireX ready. Second, since it utilises an intel chipset, nvidia esa won't work with it. On the bright side, it is a very good mobo with a superior audio "card" The audio is discrete with a cirrus-logic DAC and runs XFi. Some people here say that this board is a superior OC mobo too.
