Advice on my Build

   I've been working on a build and researching for about a month now and I'm just about ready to jump in. Found out about Digital Storm and I've been liking everything I see here. Now I'm just looking for some feedback on this configuration I've just about settled on.

Budget:

$3,000-3,500

Expectations:

In the short term, I'm looking for this to be a great gaming machine.  Long term, I want this to also be able to handle photo and video editing. I also want to avoid upgrading in the future- really looking for longevity.

Usage:

I want to be able to play games such as Skyrim and Witcher 1/2 on high settings while also being ready for high performance when Bioshock Infinite comes out. Also, by the end of the year I should have my new camera and the CS6 Master collection, which will see me getting more heavily into photo and video editing.

Just a few questions here:

1. Would upgrading to the i7 3930K make a significant difference with video/photo editing, specifically the CS6 programs? It will be mostly side projects I work on so while there will be rendering and such, I don't necessarily need it to be super-powerful. As long as this Ivy Bridge processor can handle it, I'll be fine with it.

2. I would like to run two monitors and plan on getting a 23" 1920x1080 monitor. I currently have a 20" 1280x1024 ViewSonic. Would I be able to pair these up or is it recommended to have two monitors of the same resolution?

3. Somewhat related to the previous question, do I necessarily need the SLI GTX 670s or would one GTX 680 and the 750W Corsair HX be sufficient for my needs? I don't really need to max out any games, just want strong performance on high settings and the ability to run two monitors.

I don't do editing, rendering, etc. but those that do have loved the idea of the X79's quad channel memory as opposed to the Z77's dual channel memory for those tasks. I dropped the 6 core chip to the 4 core to save $300. The 3930 would also help, but it would go over your budget. If you could swing the extra $$ then long term as you mentioned would benefit from the faster cpu. The Deluxe mobo has WiFi so you can drop the WiFi card. Also, with the soundcard it would take up pcie lanes reserved for the gpu's on the Z77. PCIe 3.0 does I believe compensate for that but the X79 has 40 lanes vs Z77's 16 lanes of PCi traffic. I put in the Win7 Pro in case you ever wanted more than 16GB ram for your editing, etc. Home version caps at 16GB ram. For two monitors if you want to play games on both a sli gtx670 would be needed to play games on high. The 1050HX gives you alot of headroom for the future but the 750HX or 850w would work but not alot of room to grow. Your call as always. I put in the 240mm liquid cooler even though I like your D14 pick better. DS has said they need the 240mm rad for that X79 platform. You could check with them though. D14 is very dependable and if you stay at oc stage 1 it might be to their liking. Your build, which is pretty much right-on, would work fine except I would change the Z77 mobo to the Deluxe to drop the wifi card. 	I wasn't aware of the quad channel memory capabilities of the X79s. Still finding out new things every day that's shaping my build. I had noticed the WiFi feature of the Deluxe motherboard but just wondered how it compared to a dedicated WiFi card. I won't have a chance to have a direct connection for a couple months and need the WiFi for access. I actually have Win7 Pro already and was planning on installing it once I get my system in, but thanks for the info. And as far as gaming goes, I currently plan on gaming on a single monitor but will probably stick with the SLI setup for now. I have no experience with liquid cooling which is why I was going with the fan option. Guess I should look a little more into what's involved if I decide to jump to the X79 platform. Definitely need to mull over it some more. I've got some more options to think about, and that's what I was looking for. Thanks for all the info, bprat.

	Mr. Dante. Also remember (not a sales pitch) DS will help you if you call them as well. I've found phone calls with them super helpful as I had concerns on liquid cooling as well.

Only thing left to decide is if I'm happy with downgrading the SSD to 120 from 180. It allows me to get under my budget but I'm not sure I want to drop that low for the drive. Still need to think a bit more, but I'm close and getting excited. And I might just spring the extra $10 for some nice blue LED lighting.

	Just have one more question. On the HAF X, I noticed there's a dust filter on the bottom of the case. Where I am putting the tower, it will be directly on carpet. Will this cause any sort of issue, especially since the power supply is mounted right there as well?

	I wouldn't place the pc on a carpet. It would interfere with ventilation and cause dust to get sucked into the case. A gaming computer, because of the larger airflow should ideally be placed on a desk top or small table, away from the floor where dust and hair like to linger.

	Hi dantae.jay Here is a video of the HAF X case by Newegg. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fqdSPKlMOc&feature=player_embedded The case has feet that raise the bottom of the case about an inch from the ground. Although I would still suggest to get a hard flat surface that you can set on the carpet then your case can sit on that. bprat22 beat me to it. I do agree that ideally it should sit on your desk. 	Thank you both for the replies. I'm getting a new desk to accommodate the new two monitor setup, so I'll keep this mind as I'm looking for one.

	Hi dante.jay, You have a well thought out system and you made all the right changes. The one thing you should do is get the CPU OC to Stage-1. The 3930K is unlocked by Intel so that the processor can be OC. I think it is a mistake not to take advantage of it. The OC provided by DS will not shorten the life of the CPU and it does help with performance. You have the best cooler for a stage-1 OC. It is $50 well spent. Frank

	I haven't overclocked my system before, but as I understand it overclocking creates more heat which in turns reduces the lifetime of the components (of course granting performance gains in the process). Even with cooling, it would still affect the processor's lifespan wouldn't it? One of my main goals is to have a great system that will last me a long time. If you're saying it won't affect it at all or not very much, I'd definitely love to consider it. I guess I'd just like a little more info about that stage of overclocking before I make that decision.

	Hi dante.jay I use a 6ft folding table for my computer dest. Inexpensive and gives me plenty of work space. It also is wide enough to hold all my equipment including my PC. I am not sure if it would work for you but just something to think about.

	Hi dante.jay, Over clocking a CPU does generate more heat but that is not a problem if you have the cooling to carry it away. The important thing about long life is what temps your CPU operates at. DS won't send you a computer that doesn't operate within normal OC operating temperatures. We have many repeat costumers coming back for a second DS computer after theirs has become out dated. Being outdated is generally why a DS computer is replaced. Not because the CPU or other component failed. A stage-1 OC won't shorten the useful life of your CPU. Go for the stage-1 OC, you won't be sorry. Frank
