Their comment is in the user comments section at the bottom (forget what page)

My original 10-40% gain statement were based on NVIDIA benchmarks that were done with drivers that anandtech dŒs not currently have access to. Since the GTX690 is a dual core card, the drivers had to have a major overhaul to deal with heat and such. Performance will increase even more as drivers are polished; whereas the 680 won't see near as much improvement with future driver releases.

Trust me, this card is capable of 10-40% gains over the 680GTX in SLI.

i really can not see this happening because the same can be said of the sli gtx 680 drivers. the best buy imo is sli gtx 680 because if one card breaks i dont have to spend 1k to get it replaced. downclocked GPU'S will not be stronger than higher clocked stock GPU'S of the sli 680's, " i don't see where you are getting your information that the 680's will not improve with future drivers, for nvidia the 680 is their number one seller, look at the drivers for the 580 which massively increased the performance compared to the reference drivers.

Firstly, I don't see where I said one time that the 680's wont improve. I didn't. I said "the 680 won't see near as much improvement with future driver releases." The dual core card will improve more than the single core card because the single core drivers are already farther along in development/polish than the dual core ones.

Second, if you're getting a new pc, your hardware is under warranty. Isn't gonna cost you to replace a faulty piece of hardware.

Third, the 680 isn't using "reference drivers", they are official release that were based off of the 580 drivers. They won't improve as much as the 690 drivers because, simply, there isn't as much to improve.

Fourth, if you're using 2 cards for the 680's in sli, your doubling your chance of something breaking. 1 of 2 cards is more likely to break than one card if you're picking between SLI and a single 690. I've gone with 690s in SLI and called it a day.

First of all please take the time to read my post before you miss quote something i said :Your quote I don't see where I said one time that the 680's wont improve, What i actually said in my post i don't see where you are getting your information that the 680's will not improve with future drivers. i am just confused on your comment about the potential of the 680 drivers Nvidia will not stop releasing drivers for their cards and EVERYONE knows that performance improves as more and more drivers are released. The. 680GTX. Cards. Will. Not. Improve. With. Future. Drivers. As. Much. As. The. 690GTX. Cards. Will. With. Future. Drivers. Because. The. Single. Core. Nvidia. Drivers. Are. Already. Further. Established.

I never said the 680's wouldn't improve with future drivers. They WILL IMPROVE, just not as much as the dual core cards.

I did read your post. It appears that English is not your first language and you are missing something critical about my statements. There WILL be more drivers released for ALL current NVIDIA Cards, but the dual core ones will improve MORE as power management, heat, performance between two cores, etc. is refined.

I'll say it once again, in case I'm still confusing: The 680s WILL IMPROVE with future drivers but NOT AS MUCH as the 690s.

i take it you have a hard time taking criticism, and attack/insult people on a forum for asking/questioning statements that you make. It seems like you think the only valid OPINION is your own, and everyone else is just wrong? Im sorry if my contradictions of your claims upset you, a forum dŒs not seem like the proper place for you to post your ideas if you cant take criticism from others, andMy point was imo nothing you have said proves to me that the 690's will perform 10-40% better than the 680's. NOW obviously the 690's drivers will show more improvement over the 680's because the 680's are farther along in driver development. BUT that is not proof of them being 10-40% better than the 680's, say a year from now when the drivers are just as polished as the 680's. i feel bad that you need to act that childish, and insult people that you have never met. i guess i was raised differently, to each their own i guess.Travis.

You'll have to excuse me for getting frustrated. I had to say it FOUR times to get you to understand that I was NOT saying that the 680s would not improve with future updates.

Second, you insult me by saying that I'm not taking the time to read your post before I respond and inferring that I might be incapable of doing so. Yet, it's you who failed to understand what I was saying.

I'd accept criticism if it was backed by more than you disagreeing based on personal, non professional, understandings of clock speeds.

I'm no teacher and didn't chose to be one as a career path. It's not my job to teach you English to understand what I say. If me saying something in text writing 4 times isn't enough to make you understand it, then I don't think it's improper for me to assume your not a native English speaker. I don't see how my statement was offensive. It's the truth that I had to say "The 680s WILL IMPROVE with future drivers but NOT AS MUCH as the 690s." 4 times to get you to comprehend it. Reread the replies.

First time I said it: "Since the GTX690 is a dual core card, the drivers had to have a major overhaul to deal with heat and such. Performance will increase even more as drivers are polished; whereas the 680 won't see near as much improvement with future driver releases. "

Second Time I said it: "Firstly, I don't see where I said one time that the 680's wont improve. I didn't. I said "the 680 won't see near as much improvement with future driver releases." The dual core card will improve more than the single core card because the single core drivers are already farther along in development/polish than the dual core ones."

Third Time I said it: "I will spell it out for you. The. 680GTX. Cards. Will. Not. Improve. With. Future. Drivers. As. Much. As. The. 690GTX. Cards. Will. With. Future. Drivers. Because. The. Single. Core. Nvidia. Drivers. Are. Already. Further. Along. Therefore. There. Is. Not. As. Much. Room. For. Improvement. As. There. Is. With. The. Newer. Dual. Core. Cards. Due. To. Dual. Core. Card. Drivers. Not. Being. As. Established."

Fourth Time I said it: "I'll say it once again, in case I'm still confusing: The 680s WILL IMPROVE with future drivers but NOT AS MUCH as the 690s."

There. It took 4 times for you to understand what I was saying. That leaves me with 2 options.

1) You're not fluent/perfect in English (perfectly understandable)
2) You're an idiot

Nothing I said was an insult. I gave you the benefit of the doubt and assumed that you were not an idiot and, in fact, you weren't a native English speaker.

In this conversation, I did view my opinion as valid over yours because you never once quoted a source.

Go whine elsewhere and learn to understand information before you comment on it.

Edited by Err0xx - 21 May 2012 at 8:31pm

I am sorry but I stick by my comments. No where in that review do they test TRIM or state flat out that TRIM works in RAID. If you run two SSDs with SandForce controllers in RAID your write performance will drop off after all of the memory blocks have been wrote to. TRIM dŒsn't work in RAID unless something has changed just recently.

The only currant drive that I know about that is using background garbage collection is the Samsung 830. Now with Corsair using new firmware I don't know what they are doing. But I don't think they had the currant Firmware in January.

In the conclusion the review states: "TRIM support, insane performance both in read and write scenarios and 1GB/s available in RAID 0." I read this as saying that the Corsair drive has Trim Support and I agree with that. But it dŒsn't say TRIM works in RAID. I have not seen any review, by more reliable reviewers than this outfit, that TRIM works in RAID.

Frank

Edited by FrankW - 21 May 2012 at 4:55am

Right now the 690 isn't doing what it's capable of. Give it a month and revisit your analysis.

In regards to 690's in SLI - Quad SLI has never been 100% efficient; in other words, 4 graphics cards with single chips might produce 50 FPS each, whereas 4 graphics cards with single chips in SLI might produce a total of 160 FPS, or 40 FPS per card. While the total FPS of the Quad SLI obviously destroys the 50 FPS of the single card, each chip isn't performing to its full potential.

Nvidia has been busting its butt to work on drivers to correct this, which will be needed for the GTX690 to have its full potential realized. In the next 1-2 months we'll see this card really shine.

Edited by Err0xx - 20 May 2012 at 6:07pm

Since the GTX690 is a dual core card, the drivers had to have a major overhaul to deal with heat and such. Performance will increase even more as drivers are polished; whereas the 680 won't see near as much improvement with future driver releases.

Trust me, this card is capable of 10-40% gains over the 680GTX in SLI.

Edited by Err0xx - 20 May 2012 at 6:08pm

More often than not they have to sacrifice a significant amount of single-GPU performance in order to put two GPUs on a single card, and in the rare occasions where that tradeoff dŒsn€™t happen there€™s some other tradeoff such as a loud cooler or immense power consumption. NVIDIA told us that they could break this tradition and put two full GTX 680s on a single card, and that they could do that while making it quieter and less power consuming than a dual video card SLI setup. After going through our benchmarking process we can safely say that NVIDIA has met their goals.

From a gaming performance perspective we haven€™t seen a dual-GPU card reach the performance of a pair of high-end cards in SLI/CF since the Radeon HD 4870X2 in 2008, so it€™s quite refreshing to see someone get so close again 4 years later. The GTX 690 dŒsn€™t quite reach the performance of the GTX 680 SLI, but it€™s very, very close. Based on our benchmarks we€™re looking at 95% of the performance of the GTX 680 SLI at 5760x1200 and 96% of the performance at 2560x1600. These are measurable differences, but only just. For all practical purposes the GTX 690 is a single card GTX 680 SLI €“ a single card GTX 680 SLI that consumes noticeably less power under load and is at least marginally quieter too."

The site breakdown of benchmarks and tests is here:

In some tests the GTX 690 WAS FASTER THAN SLI GTX 680s by 10-40%. In some cases, it was on-par. GTX 690 in SLI would be about 40-70% faster than 3 GTX 680s in TRI- SLI.

The GTX 690 has a dual core GPU, whereas the GTX 680 has a single. This makes up for the clock differences. If nothing else, read the conclusion at the site I linked you. They explain this.

Anandtech says: " In any case, for GTX 690 we€™re looking at a base clock of 915MHz, a boost clock of 1019MHz, and a memory clock of 6.006GHz. Compared to the GTX 680 this is 91% of the base clock, 96% of the boost clock, and the same memory bandwidth; this is the closest a dual-GPU NVIDIA card has ever been to its single-GPU counterpart, particularly when it comes to memory bandwidth. Furthermore GTX 690 uses fully enabled GPUs €“ every last CUDA core and every last ROP is active €“ so the difference between GTX 690 and GTX 680 is outright the clockspeed difference and nothing more.

Of course this dŒs mean that NVIDIA had to make a clockspeed tradeoff here to get GTX 690 off the ground, but their ace in the hole is going to be GPU Boost, which significantly eats into the clockspeed difference. As we€™ll see when we get to our look at performance, in spite of NVIDIA€™s conservative base clock the performance difference is frequently closer to the smaller boost clock difference."

Anandtech is THE hardware testing authority, and I agree. They are correct. See my BOLD text above.

Landon

Edited by Err0xx - 20 May 2012 at 3:34pm

Please read:
http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/storage/corsair_240gb_force_gt_raid0_review/7

Some SSD's do support TRIM in RAID 0 - the Corsair 240's and the intels are two examples of drives that do. Jump to the conclusion section of the article in the link I posted. Even many new SSD's that don't have TRIM support in RAID 0, have housekeeping functions that run in the background of the drives themselves that are arguably better than TRIM.

SSD's in RAID 0 have one of the following for almost any SSD made after 2011: 1. Support TRIM or 2. Have housekeeping capabilities equal to or greater than TRIM.

I work in a server-level corporate environment and we have 2 huge data servers with 1200 SSD's per server. There are many raid-arrays within each. In 5 years of near 24/7 usage, 2 drives have failed. I wouldn't worry about SSD failure in RAID 0. Can it happen? Sure, but it is very unlikely during the lifespan of your PC. These things are very reliable, especially with no moving parts. The SSD failure rate is very, very low. Backing up data for any raid config is always suggested, but don't let failure rate deter you from going SSD Raid-0.

This isn't an issue.

Landon

Edited by Err0xx - 20 May 2012 at 11:37am

I just think that the DS recommended ram at 1600mhz will be a bottleneck for a 4.5-4.8ghz processor combined with SSD's in RAID - kinda like putting mud tires on a Ferrari, so to speak.

Edited by Err0xx - 20 May 2012 at 2:19am

I think you will find that you have one of the very first Aventums purchased by a customer. It is a very new case and I don't know of any other customers on the forum. There are others being built. Alex needs to answer this question.

2. Again my opinion. DS has to warrant these systems and I don't think you will see an OC above 4.8. These CPUs can go higher but that is for real over clockers who want ultimate performance even if it shortens the life of the processor. Some techies go up to 5.2 or so but that dŒsn't make sense to me. Particularly for a gaming machine where the extreme speed dŒsn't help that much.

Frank

Edited by FrankW - 18 May 2012 at 4:42am

You may not be able to add the fourth 680 GPU with the 1200w PS. With the 680's lower power requirements you might make it but there won't be a lot of over head. PS are not as efficient at full load or near full load.

Congrats on your system.

Frank

Did DS say they could give you Air cooling. If they did that might be a mistake. Maybe Alex will let us know.

I don't think I would want two 680s (One from each 690) pumping their heat into the case. Especially two that are going to be OC. If it was my system I would not OC the two 690s with their mechanical design and air cooled.

You may regret getting the OS boost. They delete or turn off things that you won't use in the OS. The problem is they don't know what you personally will want to use. I would get the system and set it up with the software you want and then tweak the OS. If they turn off something you want to use it might be hard to figure out how to get it back.

I note that you have a "very, very warm room" for the computer. Your GPUs will be cooled by the air in the room and if it is too warm the GPUs will run hot. You can't cool GPUs with very, very warm air.

That will be a killer system after the problems are worked out.

Frank

Edited by FrankW - 05 May 2012 at 9:07am
