I had a perfectly running vista system until I messed it up to day.  Vista is on the C drive.  I then installed xp on the d drive and it was working fine.  Now even when I change the boot priority in the Bios to the C drive, it still boots xp and it boots xp no matter what drive priority I put or even if I disable the 2nd drive in Bios.  How can I solve this?  I am 100% sure I set up the second drive for xp.  I did not overwrite the vista install.Big%20smile

you didn't follow the guide for dual boot, you just installed xp, which messed up your boot ini for vista.

put in your vista dvd reboot and boot off of the vista dvd, if you are lucky it will recognize your vista install and from there you can try and repair it.

go here and see if you get lucky

this may messup your xp install.

if you want to have each os on a seprate drive, I suggest you have the other drive off. so when you are using xp, make sure the vista HDD is not connected or off, when you use vista, make sure the xp is not connected or off.

Thanks DST,  I think you saved me.  It now boots vista after repairing start up.  I reformatted the d drive.  How do you suggest I go about installing xp on the d drive so that I have an option of which to boot.  There are some older games that will only play on xp.  Thanks for your time.

My pleasure happy to see it worked

as I said you need to have them separate, with one off. otherwise you need to install both on the same drive, and that has special steps.

why don't you run vmware in vista and install xp in that?

dumb question...how do you turn one off.  I thought you could do that by choosing which drive to boot in the bios and that was my mistake.  I will check ou the vmware.  Thanks.

you disable it manually, either power cord or data cord. I would remove both, a bit of pain really.

if you got 2 drives connected, when windows boots up it will try and read both drives, if it sees another drive that is bootable, it will overwrite the boot so that you can see that drive in the current windows version that has booted, this process as you experienced will leave the other drive un bootable.

now go and try easybcd that should help you
